Portrait Photography Sessions by Boulder and Northampton photographer Daniel Hirsh
The West End Photography experience is like no other. I create a stress-free experience by being both professional and fun (if not a little too excited at times), coming up with creative ideas from years of experience and education, and stepping in to gently direct and pose as needed. From an intergenerational family portrait in the studio to documenting an hour in your life with your fiancee outdoors, together we can make art that will give you a lifetime of enjoyment.
What To Expect:
Great communication before the photo shoot ensures a successful outcome. This allows you to be guided through color preferences, style, clothing, hair, location, props, makeup, and more. We’ll also discuss what kind of images you like – candid or more traditional? What kind of activities are you into? Any four legged friends you want to include? Are there any special locations you have in mind? About a week after the session, the photographs will be revealed and you’ll even get to see what they will look like on your own walls through the magic of technology. The photographs you select are then retouched and printed at our professional lab on professional photo or museum quality fine art paper.
Where To Have The Photographs Taken:
This will depend on the time of your photo shoot. Different areas work better in the morning, afternoon or evening. I have the Boulder open space permit to photograph your session on open space lands in Boulder. With 20 years of experience here, you’ll enjoy some secretive, yet amazing places to photograph in both downtown Boulder and Denver, along with the surrounding foothills and mountains. These remarkable locations will ensure your family photos won’t look like everyone else’s. The portrait consultation before your session gives us the chance to discuss a location that you’re exited about.
What To Wear:
In general, a successful portrait will direct attention to your face and not your clothing. To accomplish this, wear solid colors and avoid busy patterns. Long sleeves are preferable since bare arms will compete for attention with your face in the photograph (if it is a hot summer day feel free to wear short sleeves). Black is always a good choice. Bright colors, while drawing attention away from the face, do photograph well. Avoid clothing that has one bright color stealing the show.
Families and couples should coordinate wearing clothing of a similar tonality to create a cohesive looking group where each member has equal attention. Everyone doesn’t have to wear the same outfit, but it does work well if you stick to one theme, such as muted fall colors or bright spring colors. If one person’s shirt is brighter or lighter they will pop out of the photograph. For children, a favorite toy, hat, chair, sunglasses, etc. can make a wonderful prop. For adults, a favorite hat, jacket, scarf, bike, motorcycle, sunglasses, etc. will work well.
Investment:
Sessions are $250 for the first hour. Additional time is $200/hr. This includes my time and a viewing/ordering session with me at the studio or on zoom and a web site to choose images. If you’re coming in from out of town we can post the images to a private website for you to view and order on line. You can expect to choose from between 30-50 edited images per hour. Prints are available both a la carte and in packages so you can order just what you want. Clients usually spend between $600 and $5000 on additional prints, albums, frames, and retouched digitals. Please contact us for a complete price list.
